Historical Heritage of Tholur Grama Panchayat

📜 Historical Background

Centuries ago, the Tholur Panchayat region was under the rule of the Thalappilly Royal Dynasty, which had its headquarters at Chittilappilly.

Later, the region was divided into four branches namely Manakkulam, Kakkad, Punnathur, and Chirlayam, and this area came under the control of Punnathur.

Temples, ponds, and ancient boat routes still remain here as historical symbols of the administration by Brahmins, local rulers, and landlords.

Though the Punnathur fort was destroyed during Tipu Sultan’s invasion, Shekhavankavu Temple still stands proudly today.

It is believed that the famous Thiruvambady Temple of Thrissur was originally located at Edakkalathur in Tholur Panchayat.
